Wine Tasting Dinner

It was really windy and pouring rain because of the number two typhoon this year, plus nobody had time to accompany me. But curiosity overcame everything, I just called a cab and went alone.

I am pretty familiar with the French wines they offered tonight, including Burgundy, Champagne and Bordeaux. Therefore, I was more curious about the place than the wines.

The restaurant is located in the Dwen Hua (敦化) SOGO, B1

The Entrance

Displaying various truffle products.

In the main salon, they put a "tree" in the middle,

tables and chairs scattered around, represented truffles which grow under the tree.

Truffle olive oil to go with bread.

Lenoble Blanc de Blanc Champagne

Buttery, very fine but had powerful bubbles, a bit acid, crispy.

Very elegant Blanc de Blanc.

Truffle Tuna Carpaccio with Crème Fraîche and Guacamole

A pretty good dish, but the pepper wrapped around the tuna was too spicy for the bubbly.

Should be better with a flavorful Ale or something.

2008 Meursault, Albert Grivault

2008 Puligny Montrachet, Sauzet

Light, with a lot of acidity, these two Burgundian Chardonnays were a bit disappointing.

Not enough depth and nuance for a good Meursault or Puligny Montrachet.

Scampi Risotto with Chive

Quite good.

But again, it was too salty for the whites.

2008 Gevrey Champs Chenys V.V., Philippe Roty

Not totally developed yet, a bit acid, but you can already sense the layers of different aroma.

Should be pretty good after a few years.

Seared Duck Breast with Morel Sauce and Sautèe Green Peas

Simple but good, with thick Morel mushroom aroma, a very traditional French dish.

A little overwhelming for the Pinot Noir above.

1999 Le Tertre Roteboeuf, St-Emilion

Pairing better with the duck,

but the wine itself was heavy and cheesy.

1999 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Petit Monts, Mongeard-Mugneret

Typical Vosne Romanée.

Not much surprise but interesting.

Grilled lamb chop with creamy green pepper sauce and truffle mashed potato.

The meat dishes here were not bad at all.

Boring dessert, though.

Cream Mille-feuille with ice cream.

The old chandelier they brought in from France.

Since the ceiling is not high enough, the designer took it apart, then scattered the parts in this glass box.

When the light above it shined through pieces of crystal, the reflection made you feel like wondering in some forest, showering by sunlight which went through the autumn leaves.

Brought back something for Dan.

Menu

Winery introduction.

Only in Chinese, though.

*****

The place is nicely decorated with just white and black color, simple but elegant.

Food was not bad.(Maybe because I didn't expect too much.)

Wines weren't as good as I expected.
